Who Really Wrote Zero First? The Maya and the Shell-Zero

Why did the Maya even need a zero?
The need came from the sky and the calendar. The Maya were relentless observers of the heavens, tracking the Moon, the Sun, and especially Venus across long stretches of time. The Dresden Codex’s Venus table, for example, reckons the planet’s cycle at 583.92 days — astonishingly close to the modern figure of 583.93.
To record and predict all of this, they kept the Long Count, a calendar that piles up days from a fixed starting point (11 August 3114 BC in the usual correlation) to fix an absolute date in stone. Writing dates that span hundreds of years in a place-value system means you eventually reach a slot that holds nothing at all. Something has to mark that empty place — otherwise the whole number falls apart.
What did the Maya zero actually look like?
Their number system was vigesimal, or base-20, built from just a few marks: a dot for one, a bar for five, and a shell-shaped glyph for zero. Stack and combine dots and bars, step the values up by twenties, and you can write enormous numbers compactly.
The shell sign was the piece that made it work. Set into a place-value column, that single carved shell said “this position is empty” — which is exactly what a zero does. It was both a placeholder and a concept, cut into limestone alongside the dots and bars.
How early is the earliest Mesoamerican zero?
Very early. Positional notation with a zero already appears on a Long Count date carved on Stela 2 at Chiapa de Corzo, dated to at least 36 BC. That is more than five centuries before India’s conventional date of around AD 500 for its own zero.
A careful note on honesty: that particular monument belongs to the broader Mesoamerican world that the Maya were part of, so historians speak of “the Maya and their neighbors” rather than pinning that single stela on the Maya alone. How did they achieve this without metal or the wheel?
This is the part that reframes everything. The Classic Maya had no metal tools, no wheeled transport, and no draft animals; their cutting edges were obsidian and chert. And yet they built towering limestone pyramids, tracked Venus across decades, and handled a place-value zero. The achievement is entirely human — a point worth stressing, because pseudo-archaeology (ancient aliens, “lost super-civilizations”) has no place here. The mathematics was theirs.
Did the Maya really disappear?
No — and this matters. The Classic-period “collapse” was the abandonment of southern lowland cities, not the extinction of a people. Around seven million Maya live today across southern Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, and El Salvador, speaking some thirty Mayan languages. In the Guatemalan highlands, daykeepers still count the unbroken 260-day sacred calendar. The people who wrote zero in stone never vanished.
